Frigid Saturday

What beautiful sunshine we have out there this afternoon across Southern Tennessee. The thing is however, do not let the sunshine fool you. It is a frigid afternoon across the Tennessee Valley and that looks to be the rule for the rest of the weekend. Afternoon highs today will be around the freezing mark with temperatures tonight plummeting into the upper teens. Make sure to take precautions tonight as to protecting life and property in this artic air. Still watching a weather maker for the beginning of the week that will bring some rain to the area. The question is though whether we will see any wintry precipitation with that rain. More updates on that weather system as it gets closer.

Weekend Forecast: The weather this weekend will be beautiful for all of your outdoor summer activities. A few afternoon thunderstorms could develop each day (20-30%) but overall, most folks should remain dry with highs climbing into the mid 90's both days. Lows at night will only cool back into mid 70's.

Mon-Wed: A few storms will be around Monday before we turn drier again. Tuesday and Wednesday look dry and warm with highs in the low to mid 90's and lows in the lower 70's.

Thurs-Sat: Seasonal Temperatures with scattered afternoon thunderstorms.

Tropical Invest

As you can see, Bret and Cindy both continue to move off to the northeast. We now turn our focus to the southeast once again as a tropical wave is moving toward the west. This wave is showing signs of possible development as it heads toward the west. The system will be slow to develop if it is going to but this Tropical Invest is something that will bear watching as we head into next week.

Heat Advisory Cancelled

The heat advisory that was issued for today has been cancelled early because temperatures did not get quite as warm as forecasted. Highs will still be in the mid 90's this afternoon with heat indexes hovering around 100 degrees. If you are going to be outdoors today, continue to use caution.

A few storms are dotting the radar this afternoon but is not anything like yesterday afternoon. Expect the storms this afternoon to be few and far between. A look at the extended forecast and a check with the tropics a little later this afternoon.

The Tennessee Valley is in the midst of the dog days of summer. Our heat wave that is currently bearing down on a large part of the country will continue into the weekend and well into next week. The Middle Tennessee area is under a HEAT ADVISORY for today and Friday. Heat Indices will approach 105 degrees. Remember to stay cool and stay hydrated.

A few afternoon thunderstorms are possible over the next several days, but do not expect any widespread activity anytime soon.

Rainy Forecast

Showers are starting to push into Middle Tennessee from the west this afternoon. Rain will continue to push into the mid-state into tonight. Some of that rain could be heavy at times and some isolated flash flooding could occur, especially along the Alabama-Tennessee border. Temperatures tonight for the most part will stay in the 50's because of the cloud cover and rain. A good chance of showers will continue through Thursday. Temperatures will stay below normal and drop even lower heading into the weekend. Would not be shocked to see some locations receiving a frost at some point this weekend. Some models are even painting a few wet snowflakes on the map as you travel up into the mountains of east Tennessee. Doubt that will come to pass, but a signal that winter is just right around the corner.

Today...
The storm prediction center has most of the area west of interstate 65 under a slight risk of severe storms later today into this evening. This will be something we will have to watch throughout the day. High temperatures today will top out in the low to mid seventies for most areas. Tonight low temperatures will stay in the mid fifties due to cloud cover.

Wednesday-Friday...
Things will begin to clear out on Wednesday, however, temperatures will remain quite cool with most areas staying in the upper sixties. Lows on wednesday drop back into the fourties. Thursday will bring a nice rebound in temperatures as they soar to near eighty. Lows on thursday will also stay in the mid sixties. The rain and storms return in time for Friday however as temperatures continue to remain warm.

Saturday-Monday...
The weekend should stay mostly dry with highs in the sixties and lows in the fourties. A few showers look to move through on Columbus Day. Temperatures into next week will be quite tricky. As we get closer to that time frame, we will have a better idea of what to expect, but some modeling is showing the first real potential frost/freeze situation. This will be something to watch carefully as the growing season may soon be coming to an end a little early this year.

Short Term
Sunny skies today with high temperatures in the low 70's all across the basin. Clouds will be on the increase later in the day. Tonight lows will only fall into the upper 40's and low 50's as our next storm system heads this way for Thursday night into Friday morning. I think with the timing of the system though and a relatively stable atmosphere in our neck of the woods, most of the severe weather should remain to our west. A few strong storms cannot be ruled out though, especially west of interstate 65.

Long Term
Cool and Dry weather are in store for the weekend with highs struggling to hit the 70 degree mark and overnight lows down into the 40's. Temperatures will moderate some at the beginning of next week as another system is poised to bring some rainfall to the area.

Today is going to be a gorgeous start to the week. Fall has finally arrived in Middle Tennessee. Highs across the basin today will top out in the low to mid 70's. Tonight will be a little chilly as overnight lows drop down into the mid to upper 40's. Dry weather will be the sky conditions all day long. Enjoy the beautiful weather! Tuesday will be an exact copy of today. Some folks on the Cumberland Plateau may not even get out of the 60's on Tuesday.
Long Term
Dry and cool weather remains in the forecast until late in the week when a slight chance of rain will push back into the Middle Tennessee area. Throughout the week, highs will remain in the mid 70's with lows dipping down into the 40's and 50's.

Nothing of special interest today. No major shots of cold weather in the extended or major warm ups. Things look to stay pretty normal in the extended for now, but thats sure to change.

National Weather Focus
Great Lakes, Fall Storm System

A strong fall storm will be impacting our area later tonight as an upper level disturbance and associated low pressure center will be diving down from Canada into the northern Great Lakes tonight and tomorrow. The low pressure system is anticipated to deepen to around 980 mb by the time it reaches the Great Lakes. As it deepens, a cold front will be moving through Wisconsin later this afternoon and evening. A squall line of potentially strong to severe thunderstorms in association with the front is expected to be moving out over the open waters of Lake Michigan after 8pm tonight and continue progressing through Southwest Lower Michigan into the late night and overnight hours. -Courtesy of Grand Rapids NWS

Today will be the last very warm day in the 80's. Highs on Monday will top out in the low 70's with only some upper 60's for the higher elevations. Lows on Monday and Tuesday night will drop into the 40's all across Middle Tennessee, especially the Cumberland Plateau, where some low 40's cannot be ruled out. Dry weather will reign until weeks end when our next weather system will enter the picture. Temperatures however will continue to look like highs in the 70's and lows in the 50's heading into next weekend.

Thursday Forecast...

More showers will continue on and off today across the Middle Tennessee valley. Highs today will range from the upper seventies to the lower eighties. Some of the showers today could bring some brief heavy rainfall. Though major flooding is not expected, isolated flash flooding can not be ruled out.

Friday-Sunday...

Warm and soggy conditions will remain across the area until Saturday. More heavy rain on Friday and Saturday could cause more isolated flash flooding, especially across western middle Tennessee. Temperatures will remain right around 80 for highs and lows dipping into the 60's,

Monday-Wednesday...

A cold front will finally begin to clear the air next week. Dryer cooler air will push south across the lower 48 bringing highs in the low 70's and lows in the low 50's. This will be the first real push of cooler air for the 2009 fall season.

This is typically the driest time of the year. Autumn starts Tuesday and the midstate will continue to see warm soggy conditions. Rain chances will stick around until early next week when this system looks to finally move out of our area. Though that could change.

This week is going to be one of many umbrella days. A slow moving low pressure system will slowly be working its way northeastward over the next several days bringing several rounds of showers and locally heavy rainfall to the mid south. Over the next five days, most of middle tennessee could receive two to three inches of rainfall. Do not believe flooding will be a major issue at this time, but will have to continue to monitor the forecast for some minor flash flooding issues. Temperatures generally this week will stay in the upper seventies during the afternoon. Looking at the extended forecast into later this month, a more northwesterly flow should usher in some cooler fall type weather as autumn arrives in Tennessee.

As of 3am this Sunday morning, here are the latest updates on all of the tropical weather.

Starting with the closest systems, Tropical Invest 91L is just off the west coast of Florida and shows significant chances of developing into a tropical depression or storm sometime today. This system will then spread moisture into our area for later this week.

Ana is still currently a tropical storm and is expected to remain at that level or be down graded as it contines to race off to the west toward the Virgin Islands. Tropical Storm Watches are up for those areas.

Bill is still behind Ana and is expected to strengthen into a Hurricane later this week. This system could recurve out to sea or affect the east coast of the US.

Tropics Spinnin Up

The hurricane season thus far has been relatively quiet. That looks to change this week as several disturbances start moving westward with some chances of development. Too early to tell if anything will form to impact the US but something to keep an eye on as we head into the busiest time of the year for tropical storms.

Most area's will see temperatures soar into the low 90's once again today. Temperatures however will likely stay a tad lower than what could be expected thanks to some afternoon cloudiness accompanied by a few showers and thunderstorms.

Tropical Invest 99L is still holding her own this morning. The NHC still gives this system between 30-50% of developing into a tropical system. However, even then, the chances of this system affecting the United States is rather low.

A little patchy fog will be possible overnight into the early morning hours of Monday. The overnight fog will give way to a partly sunny sky on Monday with a few showers and thunderstorms possible. Better chances will come later in the week.

As moisture continues to increase across the basin today, a few scattered showers will be around today. The best chance today will be off to the east along the plateau.

Some tropical developments this afternoon as well. A tropical wave moving off the coast of Africa has a good potential to spin into a tropical storm and head eastward. I will continue to monitor this over the next few days.

Summer Like Weather Continues

As of the past few days, the middle Tennessee basin has fallen into a more summer like pattern than of late. Expect more of the same conditons over the next several days with only slight chances of some afternoon thunderstorms. Towards mid week temperatures will back off slightly as the chance of scattered thunderstorms increase.

No tropical weather currently expected across the Atlantic or Gulf.

I wanted to take time this week and highlight some of the things about lightning.

An average of 87 lightning fatalities are reported each year between 1959 and 1995.
About 10% of the people struck by lightning are killed... This leaves the other 90% with various types of injuries.

The primary cause of death from lighting is cardiac arrest.

Unlike high voltage electrical injuries with which massive internal tissue damage may occur, lightning seldom causes substantial burns.

Most lightning burns are caused by objects such as rainwater, sweat, metal coins, and necklaces being heated up and causing the burn.

Lightning tends to cause injury to the nervous system and may affect any or all parts of the nervous system.

Wednesday will be the hottest day of the week with afternoon highs pushing into the mid 90's. More storms will break out across the area Wednesday night into Thursday and continue into Friday. Some of those storms could be strong to severe late Wednesday into Thursday. After the cold front clears the mid-state, it is going to feel more like fall than summer with highs this weekend only topping out in the low 80's.

Hurricane Development

HURRICANE DEVELOPMENT

With Hurricane Season officially here I thought it would be of some interest to post a article on the development of Hurricanes. Here is an article from the WeatherPrediction website.

There are six widely accepted conditions for hurricane development. The first condition is that ocean waters must be above 26 degrees Celsius (79 degrees Fahrenheit). Below this threshold temperature, hurricanes will not form or will weaken rapidly once they move over water below this threshold. Ocean temperatures in the tropical East Pacific and the tropical Atlantic routinely surpass this threshold.The second ingredient is distance from the equator. Without the spin of the earth and the resulting Corioles force, hurricanes would not form. Since the Corioles force is at a maximum at the poles and a minimum at the equator, hurricanes can not form within 5 degrees latitude of the equator. The Corioles force generates a counterclockwise spin to low pressure in the Northern Hemisphere and a clockwise spin to low pressure in the Southern Hemisphere.The third ingredient is that of a saturated lapse rate gradient near the center of rotation of the storm. A saturated lapse rate insures latent heat will be released at a maximum rate. Hurricanes are warm core storms. The heat hurricanes generate is from the condensation of water vapor as it convectively rises around the eye wall. The lapse rate must be unstable around the eyewall to insure rising parcels of air will continue to rise and condense water vapor.The fourth and one of the most important ingredients is that of a low vertical wind shear, especially in the upper level of the atmosphere. Wind shear is a change in wind speed with height. Strong upper level winds destroy the storms structure by displacing the warm temperatures above the eye and limiting the vertical accent of air parcels. Hurricanes will not form when the upper level winds are too strong.The fifth ingredient is high relative humidity values from the surface to the mid levels of the atmosphere. Dry air in the mid levels of the atmosphere impedes hurricane development in two ways. First, dry air causes evaporation of liquid water. Since evaporation is a cooling process, it reduces the warm core structure of the hurricane and limits vertical development of convection. Second, dry air in the mid levels can create what is known as a trade wind inversion. This inversion is similar to sinking air in a high pressure system. The trade wind inversion produces a layer of warm temperatures and dryness in the mid levels of the atmosphere due to the sinking and adiabatic warming of the mid level air. This inhibits deep convection and produces a stable lapse rate.The sixth ingredient is that of a tropical wave. Often hurricanes in the Atlantic begin as a thunderstorm complex that moves off the coast of Africa. It becomes what is known as a midtropospheric wave. If this wave encounters favorable conditions such as stated in the first five ingredients, it will amplify and evolve into a tropical storm or hurricane. Hurricanes in the East Pacific can develop by a midtropospheric wave or by what is known as a monsoonal trough.

The storm that had prompted a Severe Storm Warning for Southern Wilson county and Northeastern Rutherford county has continued to weaken and hence the warning has been allowed to expire.

Elsewhere across Middle Tennessee, it is relatively quiet with one stornger storm pushing out of Overton County into Fentress County along the plateau. Look for more scattered strong storms to push east southeast from the north and west this afternoon, some of which could become severe with damaging winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes. Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 6pm tonight for a large portion of Middle Tennessee.

THIS STORM WILL MOVE TOWARD THE TENNESSEE VALLEY TODAY...PRODUCING A
SIGNIFICANT OUTBREAK OF SEVERE WEATHER IN MIDDLE TENNESSEE FOR THIS
AFTERNOON AND EVENING. THIS STORM SYSTEM WILL INTENSIFY AS IT MOVES
NORTHEAST FROM THE LOWER MISSISSIPPI VALLEY TODAY...BRINGING THE
THREAT FOR DAMAGING WINDS...LARGE HAIL...AND ISOLATED TORNADOES.

INTERESTS ACROSS MIDDLE TENNESSEE ARE ENCOURAGED TO MONITOR LATER
FORECASTS AND STATEMENTS AS THIS STORM DRAWS CLOSER.

IN ADDITION...BREEZY CONDITIONS WILL EXIST DURING THE AFTERNOON AND

...EF0 TORNADO TOUCHDOWN CONFIRMED IN RUTHERFORD COUNTY...
...EF1 TORNADO TOUCHDOWN CONFIRMED IN CHEATHAM COUNTY...

A NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE ASSESSMENT TEAM SURVEYED DAMAGE TODAY IN
CHEATHAM AND RUTHERFORD COUNTIES. THE TEAM DETERMINED AN EF0 TORNADO
WITH MAXIMUM WINDS OF 90 MPH TOUCHED DOWN IN MURFREESBORO...AND AN
EF1 TORNADO WITH MAXIMUM WINDS NEAR 100 MPH WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE
DAMAGE IN CHEATHAM COUNTY.

THE TORNADO IN MURFREESBORO TOUCHED DOWN NEAR SCOTT STREET AND
CAUSED SOME DAMAGE TO BUSINESSES THERE...AND CONTINUED ACROSS BROAD
STREET WHERE IT CAUSED SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE TO SHOPS IN THE JACKSON
HEIGHTS MALL. THE TORNADO ALSO CAUSED MAJOR DAMAGE TO THE BOYS AND
GIRLS CLUB LOCATED ON JONES BOULEVARD. NUMEROUS TREES AND MINOR
STRUCTURAL DAMAGE WAS OBSERVED TO HOMES NORTH OF LOKEY AVENUE...AND
THERE WAS SOME STRUCTURAL DAMAGE TO BUSINESSES ON MEMORIAL BOULEVARD
NEAR CLARK BOULEVARD. THE TOTAL PATH LENGTH OF THE TORNADO WAS JUST
OVER A MILE...AND THE WIDTH WAS ABOUT 50 YARDS.

IN CHEATHAM COUNTY...THE TORNADO BEGAN ALONG STATE HIGHWAY
249...ABOUT 2 MILES NORTHEAST OF ASHLAND CITY...AND CONTINUED FOR 5
MILES ALONG HIGHWAY 249 TO JUST NORTH OF MOUNT ZION. THE DAMAGE PATH
WAS 50 YARDS WIDE...BUT INCREASED TO AROUND 100 YARDS WIDE. NUMEROUS
HARDWOOD TREES WERE EITHER SNAPPED OFF OR WERE COMPLETELY UPROOTED
ALONG THE PATH...1 MODULAR HOME WAS DESTROYED ON ROB NEWMAN
ROAD...AND 3 OTHER HOMES WERE SIGNIFICANTLY DAMAGED ON BEARWALLOW
ROAD AND BENNETT ROAD.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN HUNTSVILLE HAS ISSUED A WINTER
STORM WARNING FOR HEAVY SNOW...WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM MIDNIGHT
TONIGHT TO 12 PM CST SUNDAY. THE WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IS NO
LONGER IN EFFECT.

PRECIPITATION WILL BEGIN PUSHING INTO NORTH ALABAMA AND PARTS OF
SOUTHERN MIDDLE TENNESSEE THIS EVENING. AS COLDER AIR FILTERS
