January 1988 Winter Storm

On January 6-8, 1988, a significant winter storm brought snow, sleet, and freezing rain to much of the Southern Plains, Southeastern, and Mid Atlantic states. Multiple intrusions of Arctic air over the first several days of the year brought well below average temperatures to the Tennessee Valley. A low pressure system developed over the northwestern Gulf of Mexico on January 6th and tracked across the northern Gulf over the next few days. The system spread moisture over the shallow cold air mass, setting the stage for a historic winter weather event.
