Upper Plains Snow

A low pressure system will bring the first snow for some across the upper plains this early week. A good swath of one to three inches could fall across locations such as South Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Below is a map from AccuWeather.

Portions of the mid-state are now under a winter storm watch. The northwestern sections of the middle tennessee basin are now under a wsw. Click on the national weather service link on the right of the page for more information. I will try to post most information late this evening after classes.

As promised, a map to go along with the afternoon discussion concerning early next week and our prospects of a major winter storm.

A first call will be made late tomorrow night or early Saturday as for more specific details.

Winter Storm

Just as stated below in the forecast discussion from yesterday, a Major Winter Storm is going to occur somewhere in the southeast early next week. I am currently forecasting some accumulation of snow for Middle Tennessee, though it seems at this time that is an extremely conservative forecast. I will try to whip up a graphic with this afternoon's forecast package to illustrate my thoughts. If models continue to have such good agreement, my first call will likely be issued Friday night or Saturday morning.

Snow is currently falling across Arkansas and southern Missouri and is headed this way. School closings are continued to be updated at the top of the blog. Be careful if headed out because of flooding as well as the wintry threat later this morning.

Middle Tennessee Basin

Introduction

The upcoming week is going to bring some very extreme winter weather to portions of Middle Tennessee. Forecasting this upcoming week has been more than a challenge. This forecast continues to change by the hour, and I am afraid this event has the potential to continue to surprise until its over. For now, will go with my best gut feeling as far as precipitation types and accumulations. Will also review what Watches/Warnings have been issued by the national weather service.

Forecast Discussion

Remaining cold arctic air associated with high pressure to the north is going to become embattled with some warmer, more moist air aloft flowing up from the gulf of mexico. This is going to create periods of freezing rain and sleet for portions of northern and northwestern middle tennessee. Central and southern middle tennessee should stay mostly in the rain category, but we will have to monitor surface temperatures just in case models are underdoing cold shallow air. The farther northwest in middle tennessee that you travel, the worst the conditions will be. A damaging ice storm is set to cripple portions of missouri, southern kentucky, northern arkansas, and northwestern tennessee. Loss of power is something that may become an issue on into the day tuesday. Residents in the above area's need to finish preparations today for a damaging and possibly lengthy ice storm this week.

Icy Weather On The Way

As you may well know, some wintry weather is on the way to middle Tennessee. You would not know it this evening if you stepped outside. Temperatures ahead of the arctic front are still slowly warming. Later this afternoon into tonight as a cold front hangs up in Middle Tennessee, cold shallow air mixing with some light precipitation will make for a hazardous mess for some area's of Middle Tennessee. A freezing rain advisory has been issued for the highlighted area's above. Stay tuned for more information.

Snow Totals

What a surprise we had blow through the area on Thursday night. Before a upper level low began to depart to the northeast, rain changed over to big ole wet flakes. Schools all across the midstate were closed today due to icy roadways. Here in Pulaski we measured right around half of an inch of snow. Many locales however totaled several inches.
